Pepper rasam is easy to make and is a good home remedy for loss of appetite during fever and cold.A traditional pepper rasam is made without tomato.This is one rasam recipe that is done without any rasam powder.Basically its a spicy and tangy south Indian black pepper soup.
- Pepper corns – 2 tsp
- Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
- Garlic cloves – 10
- Jaggery – 1 tsp
- Tamarind juice – 2 tsp
- Salt – to taste
- Ghee -1/2 tsp
- Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
- Dry red chillies – 2
- Curry leaves -10
- Crush or grind coarsely the pepper corns,garlic cloves and cumin seeds.
- Boil 4 cups of water and add crushed pepper-cumin-garlic along with jaggery and tamarind juice to the boiling water.
- Add salt to taste.
- Boil again for 5 minutes.
- Add a tempering to the rasam with mustard seeds,broken dry red chillies and curry leaves in 1/2 tsp of ghee.And our refreshing pepper rasam is ready to drink/serve.

Crush or grind coarsely the pepper corns,cumin seeds and garlic cloves.
Keep 4 cups of water for boiling in a sauce-pot.
Wait until the water comes to a boil and then add jaggery,tamarind juice and crushed pepper-garlic-cumin.
Add salt to taste. Boil for 5 more minutes and turn off the flame.For tempering heat up 1/2 tsp of ghee.
Add mustard seeds,curry leaves and broken dry red chillies to hot ghee.Fry for few seconds and add this tempering to the rasam and stir. Very refreshing and healthy pepper rasam without tomato is ready !
